BMC Selects 50 Mumbai Teachers for Adarsh Shikshak Mayor Award
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation announced the selection of 50 educators for the Adarsh Shikshak Mayor Award 2025–26, finalising the honours ahead of Teachers' Day celebrations commemorating the birth anniversary of former President Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan on September 5. The announcement followed evaluation rounds conducted at the City of Los Angeles Municipal School in Matunga.
The final list of awardees was jointly declared on September 3, 2026, by Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde and Education Committee Chairperson Rajeshree Shirwadkar during a press conference held at the BMC headquarters.
The selection process involved an evaluation of 121 teachers drawn from municipal primary, secondary, and special schools, as well as private aided and unaided institutions across the city. Candidates appeared for interviews conducted over three days on August 21, August 22, and August 24 at the Matunga school.
Civic authorities scrutinised the participating educators based on multiple parameters, including their academic performance, administrative records, teaching innovation, student achievements, and direct contributions to school development.
Speaking at the announcement, Education Committee Chairperson Rajeshree Shirwadkar commended the selected teachers. Shirwadkar said that a teacher not only imparts education but acts as a guide shaping the personality of students, adding that it is their responsibility to honour educators who work dedicatedly towards the holistic development of students.
The Mayor's Award has been conferred annually since 1971 to recognise outstanding contributions to the field of education and to celebrate teachers who foster confidence, values, skills, and social awareness among students. The Education Committee reaffirmed its commitment to continuing the annual tradition to motivate civic school staff and elevate educational standards across Mumbai.
