BMC to Issue Birth, Death and Marriage Certificates Within 3 Days in Mumbai

On August 11, 2026, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) launched a new facility under its Registration of Birth & Death (RBD) portal to issue newly registered birth, death, and marriage certificates within three working days across Mumbai. Under this updated civic service, the local body has begun accepting fresh applications for registrations and corrections at Citizen Facilitation Centres (CFCs) situated in ward offices.

As part of the new facility, parents can now get a child's name added to a birth certificate up to 15 years after birth, with the revised certificate being issued within three working days. Corrections required on marriage certificates will also be processed within a three-day timeframe. Meanwhile, corrections on birth and death certificates—including updates to parents' names, addresses, dates of birth, and gender—will take up to 25 working days to complete.

The new process replaces the earlier manual system, under which citizens were required to submit their applications directly to the office of the Medical Officer of Health and make repeated physical visits to inquire about their application status. That manual workflow created operational bottlenecks, making it difficult for the municipal administration to effectively track workloads and monitor pending applications across wards.

Additionally, the civic body introduced a provision allowing citizens to convert older birth and death certificates into QR-code-enabled versions. To access this service, applicants must submit their original physical certificate for official verification, a process expected to take up to 25 working days. Each applicant will be assigned a unique identification number on their acknowledgement receipt to track the status of their application. The BMC stated that processing timelines may extend beyond the standard timeframe in cases where legacy records are missing or cannot be traced.

To ensure smooth implementation, Municipal Commissioner Ashwini Bhide directed officials to launch public awareness campaigns. Information boards are also being set up across ward office Citizen Facilitation Centres to guide visiting citizens through the new application and tracking procedures.
