BMC to Launch Fellowship Programme to Hire 50 Young Professionals

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation is set to launch its own fellowship programme to recruit 50 young professionals across key administrative offices in Mumbai. The initiative aims to integrate young talent into municipal operations to support governance and policy-making.

The proposal, prepared by the BMC's General Administration Department, outlines the appointment of 50 fellows on a one-year contractual basis. Selected candidates will be assigned to work directly within the offices of the municipal commissioner, additional municipal commissioners, the mayor, the standing committee chairman, and heads of various civic departments.

The civic body's initiative draws inspiration from the Maharashtra government's Chief Minister Fellowship programme, which was originally launched in 2015. That state-level scheme was created to introduce young professionals to governance, offering them direct exposure to public administration while enabling the government to benefit from fresh skills and outside perspectives.

According to the civic administration, the fellowship will provide critical operational support to senior officers while giving the fellows first-hand experience in managing the day-to-day functions of the country's largest municipal corporation.

During their one-year tenure, the fellows will be responsible for policy implementation, project planning, data analysis, preparation of administrative reports, and inter-departmental coordination. The administration noted that the fellows will also assist various departments in monitoring and tracking the progress of civic projects and other local initiatives across the city.
