BMC Updates Leptospirosis Treatment Guidelines for Mumbai Civic Hospitals

BMC Updates Leptospirosis Treatment Guidelines for Mumbai Civic Hospitals

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) issued updated clinical guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of leptospirosis across all civic-run hospitals and healthcare facilities in Mumbai on July 7, 2026. The new protocol is designed to standardize the management of the disease ahead of the monsoon season.

The updated guidelines aim to ensure early detection and prompt treatment of the potentially life-threatening bacterial disease. Medical doctors at municipal healthcare facilities will use these standardized recommendations to manage both suspected and confirmed cases.

While the BMC's official circular provides a protocol for diagnosis and treatment, it does not contain instructions regarding the prevention of medication-related side effects. To address this, gastroenterologists have advised that patients take an antacid alongside doxycycline, a medication used to treat the condition.

According to these medical specialists, taking an antacid can help patients avoid gastritis, which is the inflammation of the stomach lining. This advice is intended to support patients during their treatment by preventing stomach irritation.
