BMC Urges Parties to Help Voters as 36 Lakh Names Removed from Mumbai Rolls
Municipal Commissioner and District Election Officer Ashwini Bhide convened a meeting with political party representatives at the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation headquarters to review the Special Intensive Revision (SIR)-2026, appealing for their help after 36 lakh voter names were removed from Mumbai's electoral rolls.
The civic body issued the appeal on Thursday, September 3, 2026, urging political parties to actively connect with voters and ensure they complete the documentation required for inclusion in the revised lists. The push follows the disclosure that 36 lakh names were struck from the city's voter registry during the ongoing revision drive.
During the meeting at the BMC headquarters, party representatives received a detailed presentation regarding the progress of SIR-2026 operations across the city. The briefing detailed the current status of household visits conducted by Booth Level Officers (BLOs), the distribution of count sheets, and the ongoing data collection and digitisation work. Authorities also discussed the publication of preliminary voter lists and the official approval of polling stations by the Election Commission.
The timeline for citizen verification and updates is currently underway. The period for submitting claims and objections commenced on August 31, 2026, and will run until September 30, 2026. Officials will examine and resolve these claims and objections through October 29, 2026. Once all issues and objections are formally addressed, the final electoral roll for Mumbai is scheduled for publication on November 4, 2026.
Bhide emphasised that coordination between political parties and BLOs at the polling station level is critical to the success of the exercise. She called on party workers to guide citizens through the submission of necessary paperwork so the revision process can proceed smoothly.
Bhide concluded the session by appealing for broad cooperation from all political entities, stating that joint efforts are essential to ensure the electoral roll revision remains transparent, thorough, and effective across Mumbai.
