Bombay HC to Hear PIL on Sept 2 Seeking Policy and Support for SSPE Patients

The Division Bench of the Bombay High Court in Fort is scheduled to hear a Public Interest Litigation on September 2 seeking medical infrastructure, financial aid, and an official policy for individuals suffering from Subacute Sclerosing Panencephalitis (SSPE).
The petition, filed as Public Interest Litigation No. 119 of 2025, addresses the lack of government support, data, and policy for patients battling the progressive condition.
The PIL was filed by Mahadu Belkar, a resident of Karanjade in Navi Mumbai. Belkar's son, Tanish, passed away from SSPE in March 2026.
Through the petition, families of affected patients who have watched their children lose their ability to walk, speak, and eat are seeking government intervention. The case has become a medium for families to demand structured medical support and financial assistance after being left largely on their own.
In the petition, Belkar has also raised key concerns regarding the lack of better data and the complete absence of a statewide registry or mapping system for children diagnosed with SSPE.
