Bombay High Court Praises BMC Garbage Cleanup Initiatives Across Mumbai

The Bombay High Court on Thursday praised the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation for taking proactive measures to tackle the indiscriminate dumping of garbage across the city, noting during a hearing concerning the Kanjurmarg waste management facility that citizens must also play their role.

A division bench led by Justice Girish Kulkarni was presented with a list of civic measures undertaken to address waste issues throughout Mumbai. Appearing for the municipal corporation, a senior civic counsel alongside advocate Rohan Mirpury outlined the civic body's comprehensive strategies.

Among the measures presented to the court were a City Wide Action Plan covering all municipal wards, the Swacch Mumbai Prabodhan Abhiyan carried out in coordination with non-governmental organisations, and the civic body's Mumbai Clean League 2026 plan.

The High Court was addressing a matter concerning odour and health hazards linked to the waste management plant in Kanjurmarg. Last month, the court had sought improved action and stronger measures from the civic administration to upgrade waste management systems across Mumbai.

During the hearing, advocate Abhijeet Rane submitted that while odour issues may have dropped at Kanjurmarg, the levels of odourless chemicals still need to be addressed. The court remarked that it is never too late to take action, with the municipal corporation stating that its cleanup vision will not remain a mere paper slogan.
