Borivali-Virar Fifth and Sixth Railway Lines Project Reaches 30% Progress

Work on the fifth and sixth railway lines along the 26-kilometre Borivali-Virar corridor reached 30 percent completion by the end of July, according to the Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation.

The Rs 2,184-crore capacity expansion project is being executed by the MRVC under Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP) 3-A on the Western Railway network. The initiative aims to segregate suburban local trains from long-distance services, reducing operational conflicts on the heavily congested suburban corridor.

Project execution has seen progress in land acquisition and statutory clearances. Authorities have handed over 11.929 hectares of mangrove land at Umelman in Vasai, while the remaining land acquisition processes continue. Earth filling works have also advanced substantially across sections located on the Palghar side.

Key structural modifications along the route are currently underway or approaching completion. Existing railway structures at Dahisar, Mira Road, Bhayandar, Naigaon, Nalasopara, and Vasai Road have either been shifted or are nearing completion. In addition, construction of platforms and foot overbridges is progressing at Dahisar, Naigaon, and Nalasopara stations.

The overall infrastructure plan for the corridor encompasses three major bridges, three minor bridges, and one flyover. The entire project is slated for completion by 2029.
