Buffalo Milk Prices in Mumbai Set to Rise Up to Rs 112 Per Litre From Sept 1
Buffalo milk prices across Mumbai are set to increase from Sept 1, with retail rates expected to range between Rs 110 and Rs 112 per litre, the Bombay Milk Producers' Association has announced. The wholesale price of buffalo milk has been raised by Rs 9, bringing the new wholesale rate to Rs 102 per litre.
The price adjustment will lead to varying retail costs depending on the neighbourhood, vendor, and supplier. In South Mumbai, consumers are expected to pay Rs 112 per litre, marking an increase from the previous rate of Rs 104. Across the rest of Mumbai, retail prices are projected to rise to Rs 110 per litre, compared to the earlier range of Rs 100 to Rs 104 per litre.
Bombay Milk Producers' Association office-bearer C K Singh explained that rising input expenses necessitated the price revision. According to Singh, higher fuel and transportation costs, increased cattle feed prices, escalating labour expenses, and growing maintenance charges have driven up the overall cost of production. Producing a single litre of milk now costs Rs 98, prompting the association to raise the wholesale rate from Rs 93 to Rs 102.
The association stated that the revised wholesale rate will remain in effect until Feb 28, 2027, to help producers cope with the ongoing production costs. Mumbai sees a massive daily distribution of approximately 40 lakh litres of buffalo milk across various localities.
While the wholesale price increase is uniform, retail prices continue to vary across the city based on location, vendor pricing, and suppliers. Rates have historically remained higher in south Mumbai compared to northern parts of the city.
The price hike arrives right ahead of the upcoming festival season, a period when demand for milk and associated dairy products typically experiences a significant surge. Reacting to the revision, Bhandup resident Dhanajay Pawar noted that the price increase would disrupt monthly household budgets, though his family continues to prefer tabela milk for its taste.
