Cabinet Clears Rs 6,477.88 Crore for Jayakwadi Irrigation Project Phase 2

The Maharashtra state cabinet on Tuesday approved a Rs 6,477.88 crore allocation for Phase-II of the Jayakwadi irrigation project in Marathwada during a meeting in Mumbai. The decision aims to accelerate the construction and development of the Majalgaon Dam on the Sindphana River in the Godavari Valley.

The project is slated to provide irrigation benefits to approximately 1.31 lakh hectares of agricultural land spread across five districts: Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Ahilyanagar, Beed, Parbhani, and Nanded. This clearance marks the fifth revised administrative approval granted for Phase-2 of the Jayakwadi project.

Under this phase, the Majalgaon Dam will be established with a storage capacity of 454 million litres per day (mld). Key components covered under the approval include the Majalgaon (Loni Sawangi) Uplift Scheme, the Salimba Drip Uplift Scheme, the Shiras Marg Low Level Dam, and the Roshanpuri High Level Dam.

The scope of work also encompasses the construction of the 148-kilometre-long Majalgaon Right Canal, six on-road reservoirs—namely Galhati, Dhond, Ukadgaon, Murambi, Pendu, and Subhashnagar—and works to increase the height of the Majalgaon Masoli Project.

The Jayakwadi Project was structured into two phases. The first phase, which included the Jayakwadi Dam, the 208-kilometre-long Paithan Left Canal, along with its branch canals, distributors, and minor distributors, has already been completed. Phase-II focuses on executing works related to the Paithan Right Canal, Majalgaon Dam, and Majalgaon Right Canal to support the irrigation network across Marathwada.
