CBI and DRI bust interstate wildlife trafficking syndicate, rescue 53 protected animals

On July 9, 2026, a joint operation by federal and state law enforcement agencies successfully busted an interstate wildlife hunting, poaching, and trafficking syndicate operating in Mumbai and Kolkata. The major crackdown resulted in the arrest of six suspects and the rescue of 53 highly protected and endangered wild species, including various animals, birds, and reptiles.

The coordinated operation was led by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI). The two federal agencies received critical support and assistance from the Wildlife Crime Control Bureau (WCCB) to dismantle the syndicate, which had established trafficking routes between Maharashtra and West Bengal.

During the raids conducted in Mumbai and Kolkata, authorities recovered 53 wild creatures. Among the rescued wildlife were Slow Lorises and Binturongs. These specific animals are classified as Schedule-I protected species, a designation reserved for highly endangered wildlife that receives the maximum level of protection against poaching and commercial trade under Indian law.

Following the successful rescue, the Mumbai Forest Department assumed responsibility for the welfare of the seized wildlife. Officials from the department are currently coordinating efforts to repatriate the 53 rescued animals, birds, and reptiles back to their native states. According to authorities, the ultimate goal of the repatriation process is to ensure the animals undergo proper rehabilitation in their native environments before being released back into the wild.

The arrests of the six syndicate members and the seizure of the protected species represent a significant action against illegal wildlife trade networks operating across state borders. The CBI, DRI, WCCB, and the Mumbai Forest Department continue to work on the case following the July 9 operation.
