CBI arrests two Mysuru postal employees for allegedly siphoning Rs 1.3 crore

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Bengaluru, has arrested two Postal Department employees posted at the Saragur Post Office in Mysuru, Karnataka, for the alleged misappropriation of approximately Rs 1.3 crore from public savings accounts. The two accused, a Postal Assistant and a Postman, were arrested on July 8, 2026.

The arrests follow a detailed probe into the systematic siphoning of money from the Post Office Savings Accounts of 44 local account holders. According to investigators, the accused managed to divert the funds into their own personal bank accounts, as well as the accounts of their relatives, during a period spanning from 2022 to 2025.

The CBI's investigation revealed that the fraudulent transfers were executed by misusing the login identifications and passwords of the customers. This allowed the accused to gain unauthorised access to the savings accounts and move the funds without the knowledge of the depositors.

The legal proceedings began in March 2026, when a case was officially registered based on a written complaint filed by the Postal Department. The accused face charges of criminal conspiracy, cheating, criminal breach of trust, and forgery under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). They have also been charged under the relevant sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988.

Following their arrest, the two postal employees were produced before the CBI Special Court in Bengaluru. The agency plans to take them into police custody to conduct a thorough interrogation.

Meanwhile, the CBI is continuing its investigation into the matter. The agency has stated that it suspects potential misappropriations may have also taken place in other customer accounts, which are currently being analysed. The CBI remains committed to unearthing the full extent of the financial fraud at the earliest.
