Central Railway Earns Record Rs 202 Crore from Scrap Sales in Mumbai

Central Railway (CR) in Mumbai announced on Sunday that it has achieved its highest-ever scrap sale revenue of Rs 202 crore up to August 5, 2026. The milestone represents a sharp 76.94 percent increase over the revenue generated during the corresponding period of the previous financial year.

The achievement is particularly significant as it marks the fastest-ever crossing of the Rs 200 crore threshold in scrap sales in Central Railway’s history. Officials credited the sustained efforts towards efficient asset management, financial prudence, and operational excellence within the organisation.

According to railway officials, the record revenue was generated through a systematic process involving the identification, segregation, and disposal of obsolete materials and unserviceable assets across various divisions and depots. This strategy enabled the railway to convert idle inventory into valuable financial resources.

A major portion of the revenue came from disposing of substantial quantities of railway infrastructure and rolling stock scrap. Among the key commodities sold was permanent-way scrap, with Central Railway disposing of 17,755 metric tonnes of rail permanent-way scrap and 1,21,381 sleepers.

The sales also included significant volumes of metal scrap, comprising 11,658 metric tonnes of ferrous scrap and 1,370 metric tonnes of non-ferrous scrap collected from CR facilities.

In addition to track materials and scrap metals, Central Railway disposed of major rolling stock assets. This included 11 locomotives, 33 coaches, and 33 wagons, all of which contributed significantly to reaching the record revenue total.
