Central Railway Installs Second 500-Tonne Girder for Sion ROB Reconstruction

Central Railway has advanced the reconstruction of the Sion Road Over Bridge in Mumbai by installing the structure's second main steel girder weighing approximately 500 tonnes. The installation took place during a three-hour night block along the active railway corridor between Matunga and Kurla to limit disruption to suburban train operations.

With this latest development, Central Railway has now successfully positioned both of the main steel girders required for the bridge. The placement of the second girder follows the earlier installation of the first 500-tonne girder, which was also launched during a separate night block over the railway lines.

The newly reconstructed Sion Road Over Bridge is designed to feature a significantly wider railway span than its predecessor. The new bridge structure will extend across a span of around 54.5 metres over the tracks, expanding upon the approximately 40-metre span of the earlier bridge.

The increased span length is required to accommodate railway infrastructure expansion along the corridor. Central Railway noted that the wider gap beneath the bridge is necessary to make room for additional railway lines currently planned as part of the CSMT-Kurla 5th and 6th line project.
