Central Railway refunds ₹5.91 crore after Karjat-Lonavala landslide disrupts trains

On July 6, 2026, Central Railway processed refunds of nearly ₹5.91 crore to 79,747 passengers after a landslide in the ghat section between Karjat and Lonavala severely disrupted train services. The landslide forced the cancellation, short termination, and rescheduling of multiple trains, leading to widespread travel disruptions for thousands of commuters.
The total refund amount and the number of affected passengers almost doubled compared to the same day last year. Overall, the refund value saw a 96% increase, while the number of passengers receiving refunds rose by 106% compared to July 6, 2025.
The Mumbai Division recorded the highest volume of refunds among the railway divisions. Officials issued ₹2.86 crore to 37,330 passengers in the Mumbai Division, marking a sharp rise from the ₹1.42 crore refunded to 17,490 passengers on the corresponding day in 2025.
In the Pune Division, railway authorities processed refunds totalling ₹1.56 crore for 20,982 passengers. This was more than double the ₹74.46 lakh refunded to 9,689 passengers on the same day in the previous year.
To handle the sudden surge in refund claims, Central Railway deployed additional staff and set up special help desks at various stations. Railway officials stated that these measures were implemented to minimise passenger inconvenience and ensure that eligible travellers received their refunds without unnecessary delays.
The massive scale of refunds highlights the severe impact of heavy monsoon weather on railway operations. Meanwhile, restoration work in the affected Karjat-Lonavala ghat section is continuing on a war footing to bring train services back to normal.
Central Railway has advised passengers to check the latest status of their trains before starting their journeys. Commuters can use railway helplines or visit station enquiry counters to get updated travel information.
