Chandrakant Patil Announces 1,000-Bed Hostel for Sir J.J. School of Art

Higher and Technical Education Minister Chandrakant Patil on Wednesday announced that a new hostel with a capacity of 1,000 students will soon open at the Sir J.J. School of Art campus in Mumbai. The planned accommodation facility will cater equally to students, providing 500 seats for girls and 500 seats for boys.
Patil made the announcement while visiting a special exhibition titled "Swaraj: Seen and Painted Freedom", organised at the newly conserved historic Dean’s Bungalow on the Sir J.J. School of Art campus. During his visit, the minister reviewed the artworks and highlighted the need to preserve the institution's visual traditions, cultural identity, and educational legacy for future generations.
The exhibition showcases rare paintings produced between 1940 and 1960 by students of the institution as part of their academic training. The featured works provide a visual record of key moments in India’s history, including the freedom movement, the Swadeshi movement, social transformation, and post-Independence nation-building.
Student works on display depict various historical themes, such as Mahatma Gandhi, the spinning wheel, Satyagraha, Bharat Mata, rural life, and Independence Day, reflecting the nationalist sentiments of that era. The collection includes early student-period works by artists who later gained prominence in modern Indian art, such as Vasudeo Gaitonde, Laxman Pai, Jatin Das, and Dilip Ranade, alongside paintings created by other talented peers.
Describing the exhibition as a living visual archive of the freedom struggle and the history of art education, Patil noted that the collection provides valuable insight into the artistic outlook and national sentiments of the period. He stated that efforts would continue to safeguard the institution's heritage and appealed to art enthusiasts, researchers, students, and citizens to visit the exhibition.
