Chennai Woman Files FIR Over Rs 49,000 Jewellery Theft at Mumbai Airport T2
A 36-year-old Chennai resident registered a police complaint at Sahar police station on August 10 after jewellery worth Rs 49,000 was stolen from her checked baggage at Terminal 2 of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in Mumbai.
The victim, Hajira Abutahir, a homemaker from Chennai, had visited Mumbai’s Dharavi locality on July 18 after her brother, Abdulrazzak, welcomed a baby boy. After staying at her maternal home, she departed Dharavi in her brother's car at 7 p.m. on July 29 and reached Terminal 2 at 8:40 p.m. to catch her flight home.
At the airport, Abutahir deposited a grey suitcase and a black bag at the Air India check-in counter for loading into the aircraft's cargo hold, while keeping a second black bag with her. Inside her checked luggage, she had packed two plastic boxes containing jewellery, including a gold necklace, two pairs of gold earrings, a floral-design gold ring, and silver anklets.
Upon arriving at Chennai International Airport, Abutahir inspected her luggage and found the valuables missing. She reviewed the complete CCTV footage at Chennai Airport, which confirmed that there had been no tampering with her bag after landing.
Convinced that an unknown person had stolen the items from her baggage without her consent at Terminal 2 in Mumbai, Abutahir flew back to the city a week later to lodge a formal First Information Report (FIR).
The complaint was filed at the Sahar police station, which holds jurisdiction over Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport. In the FIR, Abutahir detailed that two gold earrings, a gold ring with a floral design, and a silver anklet—valued collectively at Rs 49,000—were stolen after her bags were handed over for loading into the cargo hold.
The case remains under investigation by Sahar police. Authorities noted that over a dozen theft cases have been registered at Sahar and Airport police stations since 2024, with investigators suspecting the involvement of airport insiders in some of the incidents.
