Colaba Residents Demand Relocation of Gateway of India BEST Bus Stops

The Clean Heritage Colaba Residents Association (CHCRA) has formally requested the relocation of Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) bus stops near the Gateway of India and outside the Royal Bombay Yacht Club (RBYC) in Colaba, Mumbai. In a letter dated June 24, 2026, the local group urged authorities to discontinue bus movement through the historic precinct altogether in order to resolve persistent traffic congestion.

The association addressed its appeal to Rahul Narwekar, who serves as the Speaker of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly and is the local MLA representing the Colaba Constituency. The residents are seeking immediate administrative intervention to clear up the bottlenecks that regularly paralyze the historic neighborhood.

The official communication was signed by CHCRA President Subhash Motwani and Vice-President Pervez Cooper. In their joint letter, the representatives pointed out that the current bus stops situated opposite the Gateway of India and directly outside the Royal Bombay Yacht Club have become major, persistent traffic choke points for commuters and visitors alike.

According to the association, the heavy volume of public transport vehicles is worsened by other local transit factors. Cabs frequently stop amidst the ongoing chaos to drop off passengers, which adds to the gridlock in the immediate vicinity of these major landmarks.

The proposed removal and relocation of the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport bus stops, along with the complete discontinuation of bus movement through the precinct, is intended to eliminate these persistent traffic choke points. The residents' association aims to ease congestion and improve the overall flow of traffic in the historic Colaba precinct.

The issue of traffic congestion in the area has been highlighted as a major concern for the local community, prompting the residents' association to take formal action by drafting the letter to the constituency's elected representative.
