Congress Questions Funding For Maharashtra Rs 36500 Crore Farm Loan Waiver Scheme

On June 30, 2026, the Maharashtra Congress criticized the BJP-led Mahayuti government's farm loan waiver package at Vidhan Bhavan in Mumbai, calling the initiative an "eye-wash." Congress Legislature Party leader Vijay Wadettiwar questioned the financial feasibility of the program, which is valued at more than Rs 36,500 crore.

Speaking to reporters at the Vidhan Bhavan, Wadettiwar alleged that the state government's massive farm loan waiver announcement lacks necessary financial backing. He claimed that the scheme is misleading to the public because the funds allocated in the supplementary budget are insufficient.

According to the Congress leader, the amount currently allocated in the supplementary budget falls well short of the total promised expenditure of Rs 36,500 crore. Wadettiwar demanded to know how the Mahayuti government intends to fund the remaining balance of the package.

The allegations have sparked a significant political debate regarding the implementation of the welfare scheme. The opposition's questions raise concerns over how the state will source the remaining funds required to execute the multi-crore farm loan waiver.
