Constable disarms drunk man brandishing sickle outside CSMT in Mumbai

An alert police constable disarmed and arrested a 20-year-old inebriated man who brandished a sickle and threatened his girlfriend and passersby outside the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) on Saturday evening. The incident caused panic in the crowded railway station area, but no one was injured during the confrontation.

The accused was identified by police as Waqar Akbar Sheikh, a resident of Mumbra. Sheikh was immediately overpowered and disarmed by police constable Vishal Gade, who spotted the commotion while on his way to work. Videos of the incident have since gone viral on social media platforms.

According to Assistant Police Inspector Dhanesh Satardekar from the MRA Marg police station, Sheikh and his girlfriend had traveled by train to CSMT earlier in the day. During their trip, they purchased a sickle from Crawford Market. The weapon was reportedly intended for a friend of Sheikh's who sells fish for a living.

On their way back, the couple got into an argument. In a fit of rage, Sheikh, who was under the influence of alcohol, began shouting and charged at his girlfriend with the newly purchased sickle in his hand. The incident unfolded in the highly crowded area outside CSMT, causing immediate alarm among commuters. Sheikh also allegedly threatened passersby who tried to intervene.

Constable Gade, who is attached to the LA-2 unit at Tardeo and currently on deputation at the police commissioner’s office, was passing by when he spotted the armed suspect creating a ruckus. Gade acted swiftly, approaching the suspect from behind, overpowering him, and wresting the sickle from his hand with the help of an alert passerby.

Shortly after the struggle, Sheikh and the seized weapon were handed over to the MRA Marg police and a mobile patrol squad that arrived at the spot. Satardekar stated that officers immediately placed Sheikh under arrest and transported him to the local police station.
