Cost of Andheri West-Goregaon Bridge Rises to Rs 709 Crore Over Power Line Work
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has approved Rs 24.58 crore for relocating power infrastructure, pushing the total estimated cost of the proposed cable-stayed bridge connecting Millat Nagar-Lokhandwala Complex in Andheri West with Bhagat Singh Nagar in Goregaon West to Rs 709.16 crore.
The project's cost increased after Tata Power’s 110-kV transmission line and towers were found directly obstructing the planned bridge alignment. The proposal for the revised expenditure will be placed before the BMC Standing Committee for final approval on Wednesday.
The initial provision for relocating the transmission infrastructure was set at Rs 10 crore, but detailed planning escalated the required amount to Rs 24.58 crore. This raised the overall project cost from the previously approved figure of Rs 694.50 crore, which included taxes. Tata Power will undertake the specialised relocation work directly.
The proposed bridge across Goregaon Creek is planned as an alternative north-south route between Goregaon and Oshiwara. The signal-free link aims to ease severe traffic congestion on S.V. Road, Link Road, and around Lokhandwala Circle. It will serve commuters travelling between Andheri, Oshiwara, Lokhandwala, and Goregaon, while eventually integrating with the proposed northern extension of the Mumbai Coastal Road.
While the bridge work was originally awarded on December 1, 2022, physical construction was delayed because land in creek and mangrove areas was not initially available. Preliminary work was completed during the delay, including environmental clearances, surveys, geotechnical investigations, bridge designs, and pile foundation planning.
Construction officially started on December 12, 2025, following the handover of land on the southern side. Active operations at the site currently include levelling, demarcation, piling, and the setup of a temporary access bridge.
The conflict with the power line alignment led to joint inspections and meetings. The BMC provided coordinates for an alternative layout on November 20, 2025, after which Tata Power submitted its relocation plan on December 31, 2025. The civic body subsequently recommended further action on January 27, 2026.
