Crane Overturns at Indira Dock in Mumbai Port, 2 Operators Injured

The Mumbai Port Authority has launched an investigation after a shore-based mobile crane overturned during heavy-lift cargo operations at BPS Berth, Indira Dock, causing a fire and injuring two workers.

The incident occurred at approximately 7:15 pm on 30 August during operations alongside the vessel M/V Vienna. The crane deployed for cargo handling overturned towards the ship, triggering a fire. The MbPA Fire Brigade, working alongside the vessel's crew, contained and extinguished the blaze before it could escalate further.

Two crane operators sustained injuries in the incident and were transported to a hospital for medical attention. Port authorities immediately secured the affected area as a precautionary measure.

Senior MbPA officials have maintained continuous oversight of the site following the accident. The location has undergone inspection by the concerned statutory safety authority. In addition, vessel representatives, P&I and insurance agencies, the operations and maintenance operator, and other stakeholders have been engaged to carry out surveys, damage assessments, and plan the safe retrieval and removal of the overturned crane.

The Mumbai Port Authority stated that operators are undertaking necessary corrective and preventive measures to maintain safe cargo operations. MbPA confirmed that findings from the investigation will be examined objectively, and strict action will be initiated against any individuals, operators, or agencies found responsible for negligence or safety violations under applicable laws.
