Customs Arrests Andheri Resident and Senior Citizen with 2.48 kg Weed at Mumbai Airport

Mumbai Airport Customs officers on Sunday arrested two women, including an Andheri resident and a senior citizen, after intercepting them at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport for allegedly smuggling 2,481 grams of hydroponic weed.

The two passengers, identified as A.H. Memon, a resident of Andheri, and Manju Devi, a senior citizen residing in Uttar Pradesh, were intercepted on Saturday after they crossed immigration. Both women had arrived together on a flight from Bangkok. Customs officials subsequently examined the baggage carried by the travellers.

During the search, officers inspected a trolley bag that was carried by Memon but had been checked in and tagged under the name of Manju Devi. A detailed examination of the bag revealed two vacuum-sealed transparent packets concealed inside its inner compartments. The packets contained hydroponic cannabis weighing a total of 2,481 grams, which was promptly seized by the authorities.

During the Panchanama proceedings, Devi told Customs officials that she was completely unaware of the contents inside the trolley bag. She stated that the luggage did not belong to her and that Memon, who is a friend of her daughter, had requested her to check in the trolley bag under her name. Devi explained that the two had travelled together from Mumbai to Bangkok on August 26 before returning together on Saturday.

Memon claimed during questioning that she was also unaware of the concealed cannabis. She told investigators that the trolley bag had been handed over to her in Bangkok along with several packets of chocolates.

Customs officials noted that preliminary investigations suggest the possible involvement of additional individuals who are yet to be identified, tracked, and apprehended. The probe remains at an early stage as authorities work to trace other key associates linked to the smuggling attempt.

Following the arrest, advocates Birendra Yadav and Ashish Singh represented Manju Devi in court, after which she was remanded to judicial custody.
