Dead Lizard In Cake Leaves 11 Ill In Nalasopara East, Bakery Licence Cancelled

Eleven people, including seven children and four women, were hospitalised after consuming a birthday cake containing a dead house lizard in the Takipada area of Nalasopara East on Saturday evening. Three of the children were admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Vijayalakshmi Hospital.

The incident occurred around 6pm during a birthday celebration for a 25-year-old woman residing in the Neelkantheshwar building in Takipada. Neighbourhood children had brought a cake to celebrate the occasion. Shortly after eating the cake, the attendees began experiencing a burning sensation in their chests, severe abdominal pain, and vomiting.

The dead house lizard was discovered by the children buried inside a layer of the cake after they had already eaten portions of it. The victims were immediately taken to the nearby Vijayalakshmi Hospital, a municipal hospital in Nalasopara.

Hospital authorities confirmed that 11 people suffered from food poisoning as a result of the contaminated cake. Dr Vidya Sawant from Vijayalakshmi Hospital said that all those affected are undergoing treatment and that their condition is currently stable, with three of the seven children continuing to receive medical care in the ICU.

Officers from the Tulinj police station visited the hospital after being informed of the incident. Police inspected the situation, seized samples of the cake, and sent them for testing. Authorities stated that the exact cause of the food poisoning will be confirmed once the laboratory analysis of the samples is completed.

Ajeev Patil, mayor of the Vasai-Virar region, stated that an investigation is underway and that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) department was alerted to conduct a survey of the bakery.

Following the complaint, officers from the Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration inspected the Chamunda cake shop in Nalasopara, from where the cake was allegedly bought. The FDA subsequently cancelled the licence of the cake shop on Sunday.
