Delivery Man Arrested in Mazgaon for Throwing Eggs at Ganpati Procession

The Byculla police on Tuesday arrested a 22-year-old delivery man for allegedly throwing eggs at a Ganpati idol procession in the Mazgaon area of Mumbai on Sunday night. The accused, identified as Danish Sher Khan, reportedly acted after firecrackers burst by procession participants caused a burning sensation in his eyes.

According to police officers familiar with the matter, the incident occurred around 9.30pm on Sunday as the procession accompanying the Mazgoaoncha Moraya Mandal idol was passing in front of the Continental Heights building in Mazgaon. Khan was in the area to deliver eggs when the firecrackers irritated his eyes. Angered by the discomfort, he ventured into a nearby building and threw eggs at the procession.

The act triggered immediate tension in the neighbourhood. Nearly 200 people taking part in the procession halted the march, demanding the immediate arrest of the culprit, and began contacting various political leaders to report the incident.

As irate members of the Ganpati mandal gathered in large numbers outside the building, they raised slogans and performed a Ganesh Aarti at the spot. A large police force was subsequently deployed to the Mazgaon location to prevent the situation from spiralling out of control.

The crowd eventually abated after Deputy Commissioner of Police Jayant Meena addressed the gathering. The officer convinced the protesters that prompt action would be taken against the accused and confirmed that a case would be registered under non-bailable sections of the law.
