Devendra Fadnavis Warns Against Digital Arrest Scams at Sahyadri Guest House Event
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Wednesday warned citizens against cyber frauds involving impersonation of law enforcement and clarified that there is no concept of a "digital arrest," speaking at an awareness event organised by Maharashtra Cyber at Sahyadri Guest House in Mumbai.
During the event, Fadnavis released a 42-minute cyber awareness short film titled ‘Digital Arrest’ along with the ‘1930 Maharashtra Cyber Anthem’. He urged victims of cyber fraud to immediately dial the national cybercrime helpline '1930' during what he termed the crucial "golden hour" following an incident.
Fadnavis explained that prompt reporting immediately after a fraud gives authorities a higher probability of freezing transactions and recovering stolen funds. He warned that delays of even a few days allow criminals to route money through multiple bank accounts, making tracing and recovery increasingly difficult. He stressed that fear and pressure tactics used by cybercriminals should not dictate victims' actions.
Addressing emerging trends in cybercrime, the Chief Minister noted that growing reliance on smartphones, online payment gateways, and digital platforms has expanded citizens' exposure to fraudulent schemes. He described public awareness as one of the most effective tools to counter these threats.
Fadnavis highlighted common operational tactics, including scams where criminals falsely claim illegal drugs or prohibited items were discovered in a parcel, or pose as police personnel, Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) officials, or judges via video calls to intimidate victims into transferring funds.
He also pointed out risks stemming from artificial intelligence, specifically voice cloning and deepfakes, which create additional challenges for law enforcement and the public. Fadnavis commended Maharashtra Cyber for tackling these emerging threats and stated that artists and actors can play a valuable role in spreading awareness across the state through films and social media.
Several contributors to the awareness campaign were present at the event, including actors Ashish Vidyarthi, Pankaj Tripathi, Sharad Kelkar, Sonali Bendre, and Javed Jaffrey, along with singers Sunidhi Chauhan and Mangesh Desai, and Samay Raina.
