Dharavi Couple Booked for Selling 13-Month-Old Son for Rs 1.05 Lakh

Dharavi police have booked a married couple after the woman’s brother uncovered a plot to sell their 13-month-old son for Rs 1.05 lakh and falsely claim the toddler had died in a falling accident. A middlewoman has been detained in connection with the incident, while a police hunt remains underway to trace the child.

The case was registered at the Dharavi police station following a complaint by Sunny Singh, 39, a security guard from Goregaon and the brother of the accused woman, 33-year-old Roli.

According to the First Information Report (FIR), Roli contacted her mother on August 6, claiming she had slipped in the rain and the baby had fallen from her arms, hitting his head. She told her family that the toddler had been taken to Sion Hospital.

Singh went to Sion Hospital to check on the toddler, but could not find Roli or her husband, Sandeep, who works as an artisan at a jewellery shop. Both of their mobile phones were switched off.

Sandeep later contacted Singh and asked him to meet at their Dharavi residence. When Singh arrived, the couple claimed the baby had died and that his body had been transferred to Sion Hospital for a post-mortem examination.

Suspicious of their claims, Singh returned to question the couple firmly the following day. Roli eventually revealed that they had sold the baby on August 2 to a woman named Rani for Rs 1.05 lakh.

Singh then forcibly brought the couple to the Dharavi police station to report the matter. Police have filed a case under relevant provisions of the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, and efforts to rescue the child are ongoing.
