Diner Spots Cockroach on Dessert Plate at Barbeque Nation in Virar

A birthday dinner at a Barbeque Nation outlet in Virar near Mumbai was disrupted after a diner allegedly discovered a cockroach on a dessert plate during a visit on August 19.

The customer, identified on social media platform X as Yash Raut, visited the restaurant with a group of five to celebrate a birthday. Raut shared a video online showing a cockroach moving across a dessert plate. The recorded footage showed restaurant staff taking the plate away after the insect was pointed out to them. The video also appeared to capture an untidy kitchen floor, raising concerns regarding the restaurant's hygiene and sanitation practices.

Following the incident, Raut posted the clip on X to highlight the issue, alleging that the restaurant charged premium prices despite what he described as poor hygiene standards. In his post, he called for an official inspection of the Virar outlet and tagged the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). He also tagged online delivery and dining platform Swiggy, mentioning that the table reservation had been made through its Dineout service.

"COCKROACHES at @barbequenation Virar on my birthday dinner, 19 Aug, group of 5. Premium prices, zero hygiene. @fssaiindia please inspect this outlet," Raut wrote in his social media post.

The official FSSAI support handle responded to the post, directing the diner to lodge a formal food safety complaint via the Food Safety Connect mobile application, along with the necessary details, to initiate formal action. The authority further advised him to reach out to the relevant State or Union Territory Food Safety Authority regarding the matter.

At present, no official reports have confirmed any inspection, penalty, or administrative action against the Barbeque Nation outlet in Virar. The claims and the video footage have not been independently verified, and Barbeque Nation has not issued a public statement addressing the allegations.
