DN Nagar Police Arrest Three Women for Market Thefts in Andheri

The DN Nagar police have arrested three women from Madhya Pradesh for allegedly committing two thefts in crowded markets across Andheri within 48 hours of arriving in Mumbai.

The accused have been identified as 37-year-old Sonam Baneri, 27-year-old Anmol Jagvir Singh Sisodia, and 27-year-old Shweta Sisodia, all residents of the same village in Rajgarh district, Madhya Pradesh. According to the police, the trio frequently travelled to Mumbai every few months, staying in local lodges for up to 15 days at a time to target busy commercial zones. Investigators stated that the women allegedly wore soiled clothes to deflect suspicion while collaborating to distract victims in crowded areas.

The alleged thefts occurred on consecutive days in early August. On August 7, the group allegedly stole a gold chain valued at ₹3 lakh from the purse of 45-year-old Parijat Gawli while she was at Jagruti Sweets in Andheri Market. On August 8, the trio allegedly stole another purse containing ₹75,500 at Manish Market in Andheri West.

Following the complaints, police traced the three women to a lodge near Bandra railway station. Relying on technical analysis and a tip-off, officers detained them at Bandra West railway station with assistance from the women’s wing of the Bandra Railway Police. Law enforcement officers seized ₹50,000 in cash along with gold ornaments valued at ₹3 lakh during the operation.

Investigators are currently checking whether the accused were involved in other similar market thefts across Mumbai and have formally requested background information from police stations in Madhya Pradesh.
