Doctor Assaulted at Kalyan Private Hospital, FIR Filed After Protests
A doctor was allegedly assaulted by a patient's son at a private hospital in Kalyan around 10:30 pm on Saturday, sparking fresh concerns over the safety of medical professionals in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
The incident took place at Bhanu Jyoti, a private hospital in Kalyan, when orthopaedist Dr Yogendra Jaiswal was examining a patient, Jaywant Deshmukh, who had suffered a rib fracture. According to Dr Jaiswal, the patient's son, identified as Nitin Deshmukh, repeatedly questioned him during the examination and addressed him disrespectfully before turning violent.
The altercation caused a commotion that lasted between five and six minutes, triggering panic among other patients admitted to the facility. Following the disturbance, Dr Jaiswal placed an emergency call to 112. Police personnel arrived at the hospital premises, after which the accused left the scene.
Dr Jaiswal subsequently approached the Kolsewadi police station to lodge an official complaint. However, he alleged that police officers initially refused to file a First Information Report (FIR), seeking instead to register only a non-cognisable offence by terming the incident a minor assault.
Following the police response, Dr Jaiswal along with members of a local doctors' association intervened and raised the issue with senior police officers. An FIR was registered approximately four hours later following their representation.
The assault in Kalyan comes weeks after another incident in the area, where Shiv Sena corporator Ramesh Mhatre and his supporters allegedly assaulted a woman doctor at the Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation-run Shastri Nagar hospital in Dombivli.
