Dog Left Alone After Chandgude Family Tragedy at Khavda Hill Adopted
Sheru, an Indie dog left alone following the deaths of three members of the Chandgude family at Khavda Hill in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, has been adopted by a new owner after spending days waiting outside his vacant home.
The update was shared on Instagram by animal welfare activist Rakhi Thakur through the page dharmas__tale. Video footage showed Sheru wearing a leash with food and water bowls placed beside him, accompanied by a man identified as Mane, who has taken him into his care.
According to Thakur, Sheru had lived with the Chandgude family for approximately five years before the tragedy. Following the incident, the dog was rescued and faced the possibility of being sent to an Animal Birth Control (ABC) centre. Mane, who already maintains around 10 to 12 Indian dogs at his residence, stepped forward to take full responsibility for Sheru's ongoing care.
The adoption comes after a fatal incident at Khavda Hill on Friday last week that claimed the lives of 18-year-old Kunal Chandgude and his parents, Murlidhar and Sangita Chandgude. According to reports, Kunal stood near the cliff edge and threatened to jump, leading to a three-hour effort by his parents, villagers, and police personnel to convince him to step back.
During the final minutes of the standoff, Kunal's father climbed the hill to intervene. At around 1 pm, he attempted to grab his son, causing both to lose their balance and fall. Kunal's mother also fell moments later while reacting to the situation. All three died from the fall.
In the aftermath, neighbours reported that Sheru remained seated outside the family's locked residence and refused to eat, even when residents attempted to feed him through a window. The viral footage of the dog guarding the entrance had raised concerns among local animal lovers.
Thakur urged the public not to assume the dog cannot adjust to a new environment, noting that animals can adapt to new homes, and called for responsible adoption when pets lose their owners.
