Dombivli Sports Complex Revamp Sparks Outcry Over Felling of 102 Trees

The redevelopment of the Savlaram Maharaj Mhatre Sports Complex in the Dombivli MIDC area into a world-class facility has triggered serious concerns among environmental activists over the felling of 102 trees at the site.
The sports complex is being redeveloped to provide modern infrastructure for athletes and accommodate various sporting disciplines. However, environmentalists have strongly objected to the clearing of trees during the ongoing construction activity, questioning whether the existing green cover could have been preserved by altering the project design.
Activist Raju Nalavade alleged that several small and large trees have already been cut within the complex premises. Calling for an independent inquiry into the matter, Nalavade stated that while upgrading sports infrastructure is a welcome move, it should not come at the expense of mature trees.
Nalavade also questioned the civic administration's tree plantation initiatives, pointing out the contradiction of undertaking green drives while simultaneously removing established trees at the sports complex site.
Responding to the concerns, MIDC Deputy Engineer Vijay Dharmapurkar maintained that the tree felling was conducted strictly in accordance with prescribed official procedures. Dharmapurkar stated that the required process, including inviting public objections and holding a formal hearing, was duly completed before the trees were removed.
