DRP Issues Eviction Notices to 85 Tenements in Dharavi's Ganesh Nagar-Meghwadi

MUMBAI — The Dharavi Redevelopment Project (DRP) authorities have moved ahead with clearance proceedings in Ganesh Nagar-Meghwadi, serving demolition and eviction notices on 85 additional tenements and instructing occupants to vacate within 10 days of an order dated August 21.

The notices were issued to clear structures obstructing ongoing work for the Dharavi Redevelopment Project. Following counselling and communication by DRP officials, occupants of 17 of the 85 affected tenements have agreed to vacate. Officials noted that individual counselling continues for the remaining occupants to explain entitlements and available support.

The action follows a statutory process that included notices and hearings conducted by the Competent Authority under Sections 33 and 38 of the Maharashtra Slum Areas Act. According to the order, occupants were provided opportunities to submit objections and suggestions before the Competent Authority.

According to project records, 2,634 families have signed rental agreements and 1,541 families have already vacated from Sector-6. DRP officials stated that several personal meetings and regular site-level engagements were held over recent months to encourage voluntary compliance.

Under the vacation terms, ground-floor residential occupants are offered Rs 18,000 per month for temporary accommodation, while upper-floor residents receive Rs 15,000 per month. Eligible commercial establishments are offered rental compensation of Rs 175 per square foot per month. Additional assistance includes a one-time shifting allowance of Rs 5,000, one month's brokerage, and an annual rent escalation of 5 percent until permanent rehabilitation is finished.

The Competent Authority stated that occupants who fail to vacate within the 10-day period will face formal eviction and demolition proceedings. Officials maintained that engagement with remaining households will continue to facilitate voluntary vacation so project work can proceed.
