Eknath Shinde Inaugurates Rebuilt Gaondevi Market in Thane West
Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde officially inaugurated the newly reconstructed Gaondevi Market in Thane West, bringing relief and a fresh start to over 150 local vendors roughly three months after a catastrophic fire destroyed the facility. The market is situated on Gokhale Road near Naupada.
The commercial hub had suffered devastating losses on May 21, 2026, when an electrical short circuit triggered a blaze around 3:40 AM. Thick smoke quickly engulfed the central structure, leading to the destruction of 155 vendor stalls. The incident also claimed the lives of Station Officer Sagar Shinde and security guard Kalu Shankar Gadekar, who both died due to severe smoke inhalation during the emergency response.
During the inauguration ceremony, Deputy Chief Minister Shinde paid tribute to the two fallen responders. He gave assurances that the Maharashtra state government is taking a favorable stance toward officially granting them martyr status for their sacrifice.
Shinde also highlighted the critical need for continuous vigilance and strict adherence to safety norms. "Necessary precautions must be taken to prevent such incidents from recurring in the future. The businessmen and vendors operating here must also prioritize safety measures," stated Eknath Shinde, while expressing his satisfaction with the rapid pace of the recovery and rebuilding efforts.
The Thane Municipal Corporation completed the core reconstruction work within a rapid 60-day window. Spearheaded by Mayor Sharmila Pimpalolkar and Municipal Commissioner Saurabh Rao, the civic administration oversaw extensive safety and structural upgrades at the site.
The revamped market complex has been equipped with modernized electrical infrastructure, an automated fire alarm system, and a high-definition CCTV camera network. In addition to these safety measures, the facility features newly painted trading stalls, known as oatles, designed to accommodate the returning shopkeepers.
The inaugural event drew several local leaders and public representatives, including Member of Parliament Naresh Mhaske and various municipal corporators. The reopening restores vital commercial space for local merchants selling vegetables, clothing, and footwear, while establishing updated structural and fire safety standards for the busy market hub.
