Eknath Shinde Suspends Two Thane Officials After 600 Trees Collapse

On July 8, 2026, Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde initiated strict disciplinary action against top Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) officials in Thane, suspending two and transferring another following severe civic lapses and poor monsoon preparedness that led to the collapse of over 600 trees and branches.
Shinde ordered the immediate suspension of Tree Authority Assistant Commissioner Rajesh Sonawane and Regional Disaster Management Cell (RDMC) Chief Yasin Tadvi. Additionally, Tree Authority Officer Kedar Patil was ordered to be transferred out without delay.
The decisive moves came in the wake of a massive public safety hazard during torrential monsoon rains and gusty winds. The severe weather caused over 600 trees and heavy branches to collapse across municipal limits, paralyzing local infrastructure.
During a high-level review of the monsoon situation in Thane, Shinde pulled up municipal officials for failing to execute effective pre-monsoon tree trimming and safety audits. Shinde questioned how branches could fall on such an unprecedented scale, stating that officials failed to execute their duties responsibly.
Senior civic officials cited extreme weather anomalies, claiming that the intensity of the downpour and exceptionally high wind speeds caused the widespread uprooting. Shinde rejected this explanation, noting that proper pre-monsoon maintenance should have mitigated the damage and that public safety could not be compromised.
Sonawane, who also serves as an Officer on Special Duty to Shinde and holds the additional charge of the TMC Tree Authority, was suspended immediately. Patil faced a severe reprimand for operational lapses before his transfer. Shinde also instructed the Municipal Commissioner to immediately transfer all non-performing or negligent personnel within the department.
Disaster Management Chief Yasin Tadvi received an eight-day suspension. Shinde asserted that the primary mandate of the disaster management chief is to lead from the front and physically supervise emergency operations. Reports indicated that Tadvi failed to visit key accident sites during the critical civic distress.
