Engineering Student Granted Bail in Vile Parle Hit-and-Run Case

A second-year engineering student arrested by the Juhu police in connection with an August 18 hit-and-run case in Vile Parle (West) was produced before a court and released on Rs 5,000 bail on Sunday.

The incident occurred on the morning of August 18 along NS Road (Gulmohar Road) in Vile Parle (West). A 15-year-old schoolgirl was knocked down by a motorcycle while walking to her tuition class. The rider fled the scene immediately after the collision without offering medical assistance to the victim.

The victim's father, a businessman and gas distributor from Vile Parle West, filed a police complaint following the incident. Based on the complaint, the Juhu police registered a cognisable offence against the unidentified rider and initiated an investigation.

Police traced the accused to his residence in Vile Parle (West) by reviewing closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage obtained from the accident spot on NS Road as well as cameras positioned along the route he used to travel home. The student was arrested on Saturday, and the motorcycle involved in the incident was seized.

Investigators noted that the student held a valid driving licence. He was arrested for allegedly fleeing the spot without providing medical aid to the injured schoolgirl.

During questioning, the student claimed that he was riding home from college when the collision took place. He stated that the girl suddenly appeared in front of his motorcycle and claimed he could not see her in time due to blind spots created by an auto-rickshaw passing ahead.
