EOW Files C-Summary in Three Lilavati Hospital Trust FIRs

The Mumbai Police’s Economic Offences Wing (EOW) has submitted ‘C-Summary’ reports in three of five First Information Reports (FIRs) registered over alleged financial irregularities involving the Lilavati Kirtilal Mehta Medical Trust, which runs Lilavati Hospital in Bandra.

The reports were submitted before the Esplanade Court after investigators found insufficient concrete evidence to substantiate the allegations of financial wrongdoing in the three matters. A ‘C-Summary’ report is typically filed when an investigation concludes that allegations are neither proved to be true nor established as a deliberately false complaint. The final decision regarding the acceptance of these reports rests with the court.

A total of five FIRs had been registered following allegations of fund diversion, misappropriation, and other financial wrongdoing involving the trust. The first FIR in the matter was lodged in July 2024.

In one of the complaints, trustee Prashant Kishor Mehta alleged that ₹2.30 crore was transferred to Mayfair Realtors in 2001 without a recorded purpose, while ₹14.22 crore was transferred to Vesta India between 2002 and 2003 for medical equipment. The complaint stated that ₹9.22 crore was later returned in cash but was not deposited into the trust’s bank account.

In another case, Mohit Mathur, representing the trust, alleged that former trustees and associates utilised forged documents and improperly spent trust funds on legal fees, consultancy, and medical equipment, resulting in an estimated loss of around ₹85 crore.

These cases form part of wider allegations made by the trust, which claimed that former trustees siphoned off funds and assets valued at approximately ₹1,243 crore, with total alleged misappropriation over several years potentially reaching ₹2,100 crore.

In addition to the police cases, the trust has approached the courts seeking the recovery of the allegedly diverted assets and has submitted a complaint to the Enforcement Directorate.
