Excise Officers Seize Rs 17 Lakh Goa Liquor at Shilphata Circle in Thane

In the early hours of Friday, 17 July 2026, the Maharashtra State Excise Department successfully intercepted a major contraband shipment at Shilphata Circle in Thane district. Officials seized Goa-manufactured liquor worth Rs 17 lakh that was being smuggled into Maharashtra. The contraband was hidden inside a container truck that had been falsely declared as carrying recycled plastic scrap. The operation also resulted in the arrest of one suspect.

The seizure was carried out by a flying squad of the Maharashtra State Excise Department. The flying squad intercepted the container truck at Shilphata Circle during their patrol in the early hours of Friday. Upon stopping and inspecting the vehicle, the officers discovered that the cargo did not match its official declaration.

While the vehicle was declared to be transporting recycled plastic scrap, a thorough search of the container truck revealed that it was actually loaded with a large quantity of liquor manufactured in Goa. The excise department officials confirmed that the market value of the seized contraband liquor is approximately Rs 17 lakh.

Following the discovery of the illegal shipment, the authorities confiscated the entire consignment of Goa-manufactured liquor. The container truck used to transport the contraband was also seized by the department officials.

One suspect was arrested at the scene by the excise department officials in connection with the smuggling attempt. According to the department, this successful operation has led to the disruption of an active illegal smuggling route that was being used to bring unauthorized alcohol into the state of Maharashtra.

The Maharashtra State Excise Department confirmed the arrest of one suspect, the confiscation of the contraband liquor valued at Rs 17 lakh, and the disruption of the illegal smuggling route.
