Falling Deck Material Near Mulund Disrupts Central Railway Services

Mumbai’s local train network experienced disruptions during Monday morning peak hours following technical failures reported near Mulund station, where construction material fell onto an overhead equipment wire. The incident, which occurred at around 11:53 AM, led to operational delays and affected numerous commuters travelling along the Central Railway routes.

Central Railway Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) Swapnil Neela addressed reporters regarding the incident, explaining that construction material from deck work being carried out near Mulund station had fallen directly onto the overhead equipment (OHE) wire, resulting in a technical fault on the line.

Speaking to reporters, Neela detailed the timeline of the event. He said that at around 11:53 AM, construction material fell onto the wire during the deck work. The motorman of a train passing on an adjacent track immediately noticed the incident and informed the central control room. Following the motorman's report, power supply to the overhead equipment was shut down to avoid further technical damage and ensure safety.

In a related incident reported around the same time of 11:53 AM, heavy sparking was observed near Mulund station on the Down Local Line. The sparking was detected and reported by the A19 Down TH Local Track Maintainer, who was monitoring the tracks. According to reports, this sparking incident was linked to ongoing work being executed by the Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation (MRVC) in the region.

After the overhead equipment was shut down and necessary rectifications were carried out, train operations were brought back to normal. Neela stated that train services on all affected tracks were fully restored by 12:17 PM, about 24 minutes after the fault was first identified.

Central Railway has also taken note of the lapse that led to the falling material. Neela added that formal action has been initiated against the contractor allegedly responsible for the deck work near Mulund station that caused the overhead wire disruption during the morning hours.
