False Ceiling Collapses At Newly Opened BMC K/North Ward Office In Jogeshwari

A section of the false ceiling collapsed and water leaked on the morning of the incident at the newly inaugurated K/North Ward office of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) in Jogeshwari. Several civic employees narrowly escaped injury during the collapse, which occurred just outside the cabin of Assistant Commissioner Rupali Kadam.
The office, which was opened only about six months ago, also suffered from water leakage across several of its cabins following recent monsoon rain. The incident has intensified scrutiny on the BMC's infrastructure management during the ongoing wet season.
Following the collapse, BMC employees raised serious concerns regarding the quality of construction materials used in the new building, alleging that the work was of poor quality. The staff has demanded that the civic administration conduct an immediate and thorough inspection of the entire office premises.
Additionally, the employees are insisting on high-quality repairs to prevent future safety hazards. They emphasized that proper remedial work is necessary to ensure there is no threat to the safety of the staff working in the building.
The incident comes at a time when the BMC—Asia's richest civic body—is facing intense scrutiny over its handling of monsoon rain. Since the onset of the monsoon on June 23, Mumbai has experienced severe waterlogging in key areas.
The civic body has also faced severe criticism over other safety lapses in the city. Recently, the Bombay High Court rebuked the BMC for failing to secure open manholes after a 55-year-old man was swept into one and killed on July 2. A bench of Justices Ajay Gadkari and Kamal Khata dismissed the BMC's progress reports as "good for nothing and merely an eyewash," stating that human lives are lost due to the negligence of civic officials.
With civic infrastructure under the scanner both in the streets and now inside its own newly built offices, pressure is mounting on the BMC administration to address construction and maintenance quality.
