FDA Retracts Hardline Stance on Loose Edible Oil Ban in Mumbai

Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe declared on Tuesday that a statewide compliance order enforcing a ban on loose edible oil was non-negotiable, before the regulatory authority retracted the statement just an hour later in Mumbai.

The regulatory body had initially rejected calls for leniency, stating that agreeing to demands to relax or cancel the ban would be inappropriate. However, the administration reversed its position and withdrew the remarks shortly after their release.

According to an official, a meeting has been scheduled with the state government to discuss standard operating procedures regarding the matter, and a final decision will be reached following those discussions.

The FDA's enforcement actions on loose edible oil were previously discussed during a cabinet meeting on Monday. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis emphasized the need to find a balanced resolution, stating that the government is seeking a middle path that upholds strict quality standards while ensuring traditional businesses remain protected.

The policy push had also prompted a formal communication from the Edible Oil Merchants Association, which sent a letter to the FDA concerning the restrictions.

Prior to withdrawing its announcement, the FDA had stated that retailers were informed on August 18 that demands to cancel or ease the rules were inconsistent with existing legal and regulatory provisions. The authority noted that granting concessions would not be appropriate from the standpoint of public health and food safety.

Mundhe also noted that the prohibition on the sale of loose or unpackaged edible oil is not a newly introduced decision.
