FDA Shuts Down Rustom Ice Cream Parlour in Churchgate Over Hygiene Violations

The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has ordered the iconic Rustom Ice Cream Parlour in Churchgate, Mumbai, to shut down after suspending its license due to multiple food safety and hygiene violations. The enforcement action against the 73-year-old establishment was taken during a surprise inspection conducted under the FDA's "Safe Food, Safe Maharashtra" campaign.
The inspection, launched under the direction of FDA Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe, revealed several serious issues at the popular dessert venue. According to the FDA, the parlour's license was suspended due to violations that included a rodent infestation, the presence of flies, and the use of expired flavoring agents.
As a result of the suspension, the outlet has been closed. Authorities stated that the parlour will remain shut temporarily until laboratory reports on the seized food samples are received.
Founded in 1953 by the Rustom family, the parlour had operated for over seven decades near Churchgate. It became a landmark in South Mumbai, renowned for its unique handmade ice cream sandwiches, which featured slabs of ice cream placed between crisp wafers.
The menu featured a wide range of flavors, including classics like vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, mango, pista, and sitaphal, alongside seasonal favorites. Over the years, the shop attracted students, commuters, office-goers, tourists, and celebrities, often drawing long queues during weekends and the summer season.
The action against Rustom Ice Cream Parlour was part of a larger enforcement drive in the area. During this campaign, the FDA inspected a total of 16 hotels, restaurants, and eateries. Out of these, ten establishments were issued improvement notices, while three faced immediate license suspensions for serious violations.
The temporary closure of the historic parlour has prompted emotional reactions from its loyal customer base, with many patrons sharing their childhood memories and favorite flavors on social media. The establishment will not be permitted to reopen until the laboratory test results of the seized samples are official.
