FDA Shuts Kalwa Hospital Canteen After Cockroach Found in Patient's Food

The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has shut down the canteen facility at the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation-run Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital (CSMH) in Kalwa after a cockroach was discovered in a meal served to a patient on September 5, 2026.

The insect was reportedly found in food delivered to an unidentified patient admitted to Ward 6 of the hospital facility. Following the discovery, the Maharashtra FDA stepped in and ordered the immediate closure of the premises while officials collected food samples from the kitchen for detailed laboratory examination.

The hospital canteen is operated by private contractor Ram Caterers. Authorities took prompt action against the catering operations following the hygiene violation reported inside the civic-run medical facility.

Hospital dean Dr Swapnali Kadam confirmed the enforcement action and stated that the canteen will remain shut for the next two to three days. The closure will remain in effect while regulatory checks and sample analysis are underway.

To prevent patients from facing disruptions during the shutdown, the CSMH administration has made alternative temporary arrangements to ensure that hygienic meals continue to be served throughout the hospital wards.
