FIR Filed Over Illegal Occupation in Unfinished Mulund SRA Building
The Mulund police have registered a case against a housing society member and other unidentified individuals for allegedly occupying and constructing unauthorized residential units inside the under-construction Veer Sambhaji Nagar SRA Co-operative Housing Society building in Mulund, Mumbai. The action followed a joint site inspection on June 25 by the Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA), officials from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) T ward, and the local police, which revealed that people were living in the unfinished structure without statutory permissions.
The FIR was registered under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita following a complaint lodged by 48-year-old Vilas Shantaram Gondhali. Gondhali serves as a site manager with B Right, the firm currently overseeing the redevelopment project on behalf of Farewell Real Estate Pvt Ltd. The police booked Mahesh Madival, a member of the housing society, alongside several unidentified occupants.
According to the FIR, the redevelopment project has a long history, having first been awarded to Sai Construction in 2011. While the original developer constructed a 10-storey structure, they left the project incomplete. Farewell Real Estate subsequently took over the stalled redevelopment in 2017. Despite these changes, the project remains under construction and has not been granted an occupation certificate, a completion certificate, or any other necessary statutory permissions.
The situation came to light after the SRA’s executive engineer informed the development company that a joint team of SRA officials, BMC’s T ward representatives, and the Mulund police had inspected the site on June 25. The inspection was initiated after local residents filed complaints regarding alleged unlawful activities taking place on the unfinished premises.
An internal inquiry later revealed that Madival had allegedly constructed an unauthorized residential unit on the first floor of the building, where he was residing with others. Furthermore, he allegedly created additional unauthorized units on the second floor of the building, rented them out to unidentified occupants, and collected rent from them.
The Mulund police are continuing their investigation into the illegal occupation and unauthorized construction at the site.
