First 10,000 Dharavi Redevelopment Homes Ready by Early 2029, Says CM Fadnavis
The first batch of 10,000 apartments under the Dharavi Redevelopment Project will be ready by early 2029, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced on Thursday. Speaking to developers at NAREDCO’s Real Estate & Infrastructure Investors’ Summit 2026, the Chief Minister confirmed the timeline for the locality's extensive overhaul.
Fadnavis stated that when he was initially invited to perform the ground-breaking ceremony for the city's most ambitious redevelopment project, he declined. Instead, he maintained that the first set of rehabilitation housing units should be delivered by early 2029.
“When this is ready, I want to invite the Prime Minister for an event to hand these homes to the residents,” Fadnavis said during his address at the summit. The ground-breaking ceremony for the initiative was previously held on September 12, 2024, as a low-key event organized at the Railway Ground in Matunga.
Earlier during the summit, Pranav Adani, managing director of Adani Realty, stated that redeveloping 621 acres in Dharavi would touch more than a million lives. Adani noted that chairman Gautambhai regularly reminds the team that they are not starting on a blank canvas, describing Dharavi as an active ecosystem filled with homes, workshops, markets, faiths, friendships, and generations of memory.
Adani added that the project aims to protect local livelihoods, preserve community networks, and grant eligible residents the dignity of a secure home, modern infrastructure, and better public spaces. Under the project framework, each eligible resident will receive a 350-square-foot flat in situ, while ineligible residents will be housed elsewhere in Mumbai.
Fadnavis also outlined broader housing goals, noting that the government aims to make Mumbai slum-free within ten years through a newly introduced slum cluster redevelopment approach. Declaring that redevelopment is the new mantra, Fadnavis added that the state government has also begun work on developing a fourth Mumbai in the Virar-Palghar region.
