First Phase of Dharavi Project to Deliver 10,000 Homes, Says CM Devendra Fadnavis
Around 10,000 rehabilitation homes will be delivered in the first phase of the Dharavi Redevelopment Project (DRP), Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly. He described the initiative as a major step in the state’s broader urban renewal programme.
Speaking in the Assembly, the Chief Minister stated that the project aims to provide free in-situ rehabilitation to eligible residents while upgrading civic infrastructure and establishing a model for planned redevelopment across Mumbai. He said the transformation of Dharavi would draw inspiration from global cities such as Singapore and Hong Kong, while preserving the locality's unique live-work culture and vibrant economic ecosystem.
Eligible residents are set to receive new homes within Dharavi, allowing families to continue living near their workplaces, businesses, and existing communities. For those who cannot be accommodated directly within Dharavi, suitable land has been identified across the wider Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) to guarantee their rehabilitation.
The Chief Minister confirmed that the project has now moved into its execution stage. In Sector 6 on Railway land, formal notices have already been issued to residents to complete their agreements and prepare for relocation, with on-ground construction scheduled to commence after the monsoon.
Families moving out of their current dwellings during the construction phase will be offered the choice between transit accommodation and monthly rent assistance until their permanent homes are completed, ensuring support throughout the transition.
Fadnavis noted that the Dharavi Redevelopment Project will also serve as a blueprint for 19 cluster redevelopment projects planned across Mumbai.
Commenting on the initiative, Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde stated that the project represents a key step towards planned and inclusive urban development aimed at providing residents with modern, safe, and dignified living conditions. Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Pawar added that the redevelopment would bring positive change by combining safe housing, modern amenities, and new employment opportunities for all residents, including women.
