First section of Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train to open in 2027

Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced on Saturday that the first section of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train project, connecting Surat and Bilimora, will be inaugurated in 2027. The high-speed rail project will eventually establish a direct link to Thane as part of its phased rollout.
Speaking to the media on the sidelines of an event in Sanand, Gujarat, Vaishnaw stated that construction on India's first high-speed rail corridor is progressing rapidly. He revealed that nearly 80 percent of the overall Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train project has already been completed, expressing strong confidence that the remaining work will be finished within the planned timeline.
The minister detailed the specific sequence of the phased completion for the high-speed corridor. Following the initial launch of the Surat to Bilimora section in 2027, the project will open the Wapi-Surat section. Subsequent phases will see the completion of the Wapi-Ahmedabad route, followed by the Ahmedabad-Thane section, and finally the Ahmedabad-Mumbai link.
"The first section of the Bullet Train from Surat to Bilimora will be inaugurated in 2027," Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said. "Thereafter, the Wapi-Surat section, followed by Wapi-Ahmedabad, Ahmedabad-Thane and finally Ahmedabad-Mumbai will be completed in phases. The work is progressing very fast."
The project marks a major milestone for India's transport infrastructure, paving the way for enhanced connectivity between major cities in Gujarat and Maharashtra. Commuters in Thane will see high-speed rail access during the later phases of the project's rollout, before the final connection to Mumbai is completed.
With 80 percent of the overall corridor project already finished, the railway ministry is focusing on maintaining the rapid pace of construction to meet the newly announced 2027 inauguration target for the opening segment.
