Foodwize Launches STHIRA 2026 Sustainable Food Challenge For Students In Mumbai

Food systems innovation platform Foodwize launched the third edition of STHIRA 2026, India's Sustainable Food Innovation Challenge, in Mumbai on June 26. Organized in collaboration with the University of Gastronomic Sciences in Pollenzo, Italy, the initiative introduces a new virtual incubation programme designed to help university students develop scalable solutions for the country's food, nutrition, climate, and agricultural challenges.

The challenge is open to university students across all disciplines, with participants working in teams of two to three members. Students from fields such as sustainability, engineering, design, business, health sciences, and urban planning are eligible to participate. They are encouraged to develop practical, locally relevant solutions in areas like improving nutrition, strengthening local food economies, promoting indigenous food systems, enhancing supply chains, and building resilient urban food ecosystems.

A key addition to this year's challenge is the Virtual Incubator for Sustainable Food. This platform will provide shortlisted student teams with structured support to refine their ideas, validate concepts, develop prototypes, and create implementation plans.

According to Foodwize, the previous two editions of the STHIRA challenge drew over 200 ideas from more than 300 students representing 45 universities across 125 cities in India. Past winning projects addressed issues such as hidden hunger, indigenous food revival, rooftop farming, and converting household food waste into useful products.

"STHIRA sits at the intersection of young curiosity and the complex realities shaping the future of food. Through this initiative, we hope to catalyse youth-led transformation by supporting ideas that are inclusive, rooted in local contexts and capable of delivering long-term impact," said Srijata Sengupta, Co-founder and Partner at Foodwize.

Registrations for the challenge are open until July 31. Shortlisted participants will receive mentorship from experts in food systems, sustainability, entrepreneurship, and design, along with certificates, learning resources, and networking opportunities.

Following the registration period, online semi-final presentations are scheduled for September 2026. The final prototype exhibition will be held in Bengaluru in November 2026, where winning teams will receive cash prizes and trophies, while shortlisted teams will receive incubation support to further develop their ventures.
