Gamdevi Police Arrest Two Men Over Rs 19.47 Lakh Amazon Mobile Phone Scam

The Gamdevi Police have arrested two men for allegedly defrauding Amazon and customers of Rs 19,47,776 by replacing original mobile phones sent from a shop on Peddar Road with fake and cheaper handsets.

The arrested individuals have been identified as 33-year-old Milan Ghanshyambhai Devmurari and 28-year-old Pravinkumar Roopchand Tanti. Following the arrests, police recovered four of the 10 mobile phones involved in the alleged scam.

According to the police, the complainant had sent 10 original mobile phones from a shop located on Peddar Road in Mumbai to an Amazon e-commerce warehouse in Bhiwandi for online sale. However, buyers subsequently received fake or inferior quality handsets instead of the original devices, resulting in a substantial financial loss to the seller.

Investigators stated that the accused operated a fraudulent return scheme. The duo allegedly placed orders for high-end mobile phones through Amazon and later initiated product returns under various pretexts. During the return process, they replaced the genuine devices with inferior, low-cost handsets while securing full monetary refunds for the original orders. This caused losses to sellers in terms of both the physical handsets and their financial value.

During the probe, the Gamdevi Police seized four of the stolen phones and obtained details regarding the users currently in possession of the remaining six handsets.

A case has been registered at the Gamdevi Police Station under Sections 316(5), 318(4), 338, 336(3), and 340(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The investigation is being conducted by Assistant Police Inspector Pratap Desai, Police Sub-Inspector Virendrasinh Khandade, and other personnel from the Gamdevi Police team as further inquiries continue.
