Ganesh Naik Directs Action to Protect DPS Lake and Nerul Sector 52-A Wildlife
Maharashtra Forest Minister Ganesh Naik on Wednesday directed officials to implement concrete measures to protect the ecosystem surrounding DPS Lake and the wildlife habitat in Sector 52-A in Nerul, Navi Mumbai. The directives were issued during a meeting convened to review environmental protection efforts along Palm Beach Road.
Speaking at the meeting, Naik emphasized that the stretch along Palm Beach Road is not only a habitat for flamingos but also supports populations of golden jackals, mongooses, and other wildlife. He called for preserving the ecological conditions of DPS Lake to ensure a safe and supportive environment for migratory birds, noting that flamingos have become a vital element of Navi Mumbai's natural identity.
The minister stressed that development across Navi Mumbai must be balanced with environmental preservation. He stated that infrastructure and development projects should be planned so as not to damage local habitats, adding that Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis maintains a positive approach toward flamingo conservation in the state.
The meeting was organized following a representation from Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation corporator Netra Ashish Shirke. Shirke requested formal protection for the wildlife habitat in Nerul’s Sector 52-A and proposed its official inclusion in the Flamingo Conservation Zone. Attendees at the meeting discussed this proposal alongside strategies to protect the surrounding ecosystems.
In addition to DPS Lake and Sector 52-A, Naik highlighted the need for separate, dedicated conservation measures to safeguard the habitat of golden jackals in the NRI area, as well as protection for mongooses and other local wildlife.
The review meeting was attended by several key administrators and civic representatives, including Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation commissioner Dr Kailas Shinde and CIDCO officials, including Ravindra Mankar. Representatives from the Navi Mumbai Environment Group, including Sunil Agarwal, were also present.
During the discussions, Naik directed officials to give priority to environmental conservation when planning future development works across the region, ensuring that key habitats for flamingos and other wildlife remain protected.
